Modern smartphones are able to record high-quality video in 4K format, giving a good enough picture, but when it comes to sound, then the problem visible even in flagship devices with two-three microphones. Filtering ambient noise and weak mics often spoil the resulting sound. The same can be said about the quality of communication during the conversation. According to EETimes, in the second half of this year, the market will begin to appear smartphones with high voice quality of the call and sounds during video recording.
At MWC 2016 the top manager of the German company Infineon Technologies and CEO of a startup Vesper declared their readiness to mass production of a new generation of MEMS microphones. Infineon Technologies will supply products Hong Kong company AAC Technologies, which is the main supplier of microphones for all generations of the iPhone and other devices companies.
Infineon has developed a new type of MEMS microphones that offer maximum sound pressure level (SPL) of about 10 dB higher than the best microphones available in the market. They use a solution with double back plate which not only provides a signal to noise ratio of 66 dB, and the overload point increases to 135 dB when there is appreciable distortion. Infineon's engineers have significantly improved production technology of microphones with a differential output that allows you to forget about signal distortion even at high sound pressure levels.
Startup Vesper piezoelectric offers solutions that make MEMS microphones are waterproof, dustproof and protected from dust.Modern smartphones can get clogged with dust in microphones that significantly impairs the sound quality. According to statistics, the poor performance of the microphones is the second largest problem in smartphone users after the broken screens.
It is expected that the new iPhone and other smartphones of the second half of the year will already be supplied with advanced microphone from Infineon and Vesper.
